Antelope Canyon - Explication

First I should say that in this region, there are at least 3 slot canyons that I know of. The "North Antelope Canyon", the "South Antelope Canyon" and the "X Canyon". During my trip I visited the north and south ones (also called upper and lower canyon) but not the "X Canyon" so I won't talk about it. The slot canyons in this region are famous for their amazing colors. When the sun light enters the canyon, the sand constituing the walls emits a kind of fluorescent red-purple light. Combine this with the extraordinary shape of the place (carved years after years by the river that forms after big rains) and you obtain one of the most beautiful place I've ever seen.

The most famous of the three is the North Antelope Canyon. If you've ever seen such pictures before, they were probably taken in this canyon. The main reason for its "celebrity" is that at specific time (around noon), the sun is in the right position so the raylights go straight down, reaching the ground of the canyon and the effect is spectacular (see an example). Unfortunately, when I visited the north canyon, it became cloudy and I couldn't get the amazing colors, neither the raylight :( too bad. I was a bit desappointed because even if it was nice, it wasn't as nice as I had expected. The next day, as the coulds were absent from the sky I ventured to the south canyon. This also explains that in my Antelope Canyon photo gallery, the pictures are all from the south canyon except the first picture (you can tell by the shape of the wall)
